Explore Ella’s 2.5-acre spice garden, then cook Sri Lankan curries by hand at a traditional fireplace, enjoy dinner, and get a recipe PDF.

“Absolutely loved this spice garden tour and the cooking class. Upulu’s knowledge was incredible and we learnt so much about all the types of spices in Sri Lankan cooking but also daily spices we use but don’t think about how they’re grown and made into what we know in the kitchen like cinnamon and nutmeg. The cooking class itself was fun and interactive. We learnt how to make quite a few dishes and the best part was the eating!! Our cooking teacher was absolutely amazing and Lahiru (the guy helping us, not sure if I’ve spelt his name correctly) was as the real hero making sure everything was smooth and…”

Madu River boat safari from Balapitiya: mangroves, crocodiles, a temple island, cinnamon stop, and optional fish massage.

“We had the boat to ourselves and our young guide was so great at spotting things of interest in the undergrowth. It was relaxing and fascinating all at once! As it was just us we picked the stops we wanted and not those we didn't! He found jellyfish, baby alligators and huge lizard. We visited a cinnamon island and saw lots of different plants and enjoyed the breeze of the river boat at speed!”

★★★★★★★★★★5.0 · 20 reviews · 6 hours · from $59

Six hours from Colombo to Pinnawala elephants and a spice garden stop, with pickup, transport, tickets, and flexible small-group pacing for $59.

“The main experience at the elephant sanctuary was incredible but I'll caveat my experience with a few notes. Pick up bang on time and an excellent driver. I shared my trip with 2 others who were staying out the way; I found out that the paid much more than I did which is what it is but did mean the trip from Colombo was done on back roads and my travel time was extended to over 6 hours. We didn't visit the spice garden nor was it offered. Felt like we had to get back due to the extra travel time. As expected with these places the guards will charge/ask…”

★★★★★★★★★★3.4 · 4 reviews · 6 hours · from $25

Ella cinnamon, spice garden and waterfall tour: learn traditional cinnamon making, visit Ravana and Secret falls, and swim in a mountain river.

“We did everything according to the schedule except the secret mountain river, which does simply not exist and the driver did not know about it. The cinnamon garden lastet 10 minutes and we couldn‘t ask any question because the Lady who showed us everything did not speak english. There was also no possibility to buy cinnamon. Spice garden was a nice little guided tour - we really enjoyed the free massages! Waterfalls were okay but nothing special - just little amounts of water. Some of them had natural pools if you would like to go for a swim, but be aware of the leeches and small fisches that bite your…”
